New Year, Better Me

We recognize that every transfer students' experience is different, however, we know that many transfers face some of the same challenges as they transition into the university. This blog was created for transfers by transfers to share TIPS and insight on having the best semester you can at Texas A&M University.

New Year means clean slate, right? How many years have you set certain goals for yourself, but failed or forgot before February 1st? Yeah, me too. Do you actually want to make this year different? Well, here are three free apps that can help you attain your new year’s resolution and become a better version of yourself. They have helped me, and they can help you too.

So many of us have the goal of getting in shape in 2018. But if you’re anything like me, the gym is intimidating and I never know what to do. Well, the Nike+RunClub app can help. This free app has set runs and workouts that you can choose from, and there is a recorded coach who helps you along the way through encouragement and guidance. It also tracks your running route, speed, and will pause the workout when you stop so it’s hands-free. And you can connect your Spotify account to the app and listen while you work out. I recently downloaded it and absolutely love it.

Along the lines of getting healthy, there is a great free app called Mealime that helps you eat better by providing recipes for amazingly delicious dishes that are also good for you. Once you create a quick profile (adding in any dietary restrictions and preferences), you can choose from dozens of mouthwatering dishes. It shows a picture, ingredients needed, meal prep time, serving size, and step by step instructions. You choose whichever meals interest you, and they get added to your “Meal Plan” where the ingredients automatically get put into your “Grocery List” that you can mark off and use for guidance during your next trip to HEB. It’s super easy to use and makes life a little easier, 10/10 would recommend.

Another great New Year’s resolution is to save money, and Pocket Points is a great solution. Essentially, when you are in class or on campus, open the free Pocket Points app and then lock your phone. It will keep track of how long you don’t use your phone, and gives you points. The longer you’re off, the more points you get! And you can use these points for deals at restaurants, shops, local entertainment, and even online shopping. I use it all the time and it’s so cool and useful. Check it out!

I hope these apps help set you on the right path to achieving your goals like they have for me! Thanks, Gig’Em, and BTHO 2018!
